I've never been much of a 'fear' monger, but I found this article to be scary.

    Here is a brief 'picture'.

    STDS IN HARRIS COUNTY

    • HIV: The highest priority for public health investigators. More than 14,000 people have been diagnosed, but it is estimated that 20,000 to 22,000 are living with HIV or AIDS.

    • Syphilis: Second-highest priority. Investigators contacted nearly 4,000 people with the infection in 2008.

    • Chlamydia: The most commonly reported STD; number of cases jumped to nearly 17,000 in 2008.

    • Gonorrhea: Second most common STD with about 6,000 infections reported annually for the last few years.

If I were a parent ,I would have family conference on protection indeed and don't know what else.
The percentage of teen agers not using protection is just rediculous. Why do we make it so hard for them to have access to it? We still live in dark ages when it comes to sex in this country.

So, Herpes, Warts, etc aren't on the list and lets assume that there aren't people with more than one disease.

This means that 41,000 people out of 5.6 million people in the Houston Metro area. Given, not everyone is an adult but am I the only one that thinks we are doing a great job? I'm not dissuading anyone from wearing a condom, just saying the infection rate is very low.

I know it's good to be knowledgable of such things, but I honestly cannot stand when they come out with studies like this.

All it does in my opinion is stir up fear by concentration on the subject so strongly.

I would hope that most adults would know by now how important it is to always always always practice safe sex with a new partner.....

But according to the study, not all do.

Maybe this will help them undertsand the importance of it.

I will have to agree with this though. I know I personally grew up in a home where pre-marital sex was practically outlawed. And rather than my parents educating me about it, they just said, "don't do it".

I think if there were more info available for teenagers it would help a lot, because kids are kids and either way they are going to do what they want, so wouldn't you rather them be safe about it?
