First off, let me start off with my political alignment: Liberal with a slight totalitarian twist. I believe that the government should take a bigger role in day to day operations within current constitutional means. Regardless of that, why do Republicans always want to cut taxes and shrink the government? What is the ideology behind that? I would think that by cutting taxes and shrinking the government, you are putting less money into the bank of the feds (less money, more deficit) and letting issues crop up that have got us into this mess in the first place. That is not to say that the mess we are in is a total GOP-created issue. It was a breakdown of all political systems and greedy markets.

For the Dems out there, why is spending more money and increasing the size of the government a basic fundamental party principal? A lot of people say that increasing government operations will possibly lead to a more non-american lifestyle. Are people really that afraid that we will turn into a communist, socialist or a dictatorship based country? Why is nationalizing healthcare, school systems or whatever such a bad thing? Higher taxes is of course the generic answer, but what besides that makes it so bad? Would you rather deal with private HMOs that don't really care about you and deny your parents insurance because they had a pre-existing condition? I believe that if people want nicer things (cleaner parks, better roads, better overall lifestyle), you have to pay to get them. Nicer things don't come free.

    Thoughts?

I will answer from a Conservative point of view (remember most Republicans are NOT conservative).[/b]
Well you damn sure vote for'em!

Where you so called Conservative seem to get it wrong is that you forget that this liberal does not want my tax money spent on the so called defense of this country by having troops all over the world. So what you have is a group of people wanting to spend money on what another group thinks was not in the constitution. Both sides think that and they compromise by spending all our damn money on everything. You also seem to be placing blame on what seems to be that party you vote for's intrest in my private affairs....such as paying some pretty lady to to clean out my pipe's and what I smoke.

I do realize that true Conservative are not for nation building nor government intrusion into private affairs but that is who you cats seem to make your bed with. Hell I'm not down with that and would rather pay the Dem's tax than the party that you seem to vote for.

So at the end of the day when Pepe La Pugh trys to convince me he's a cat, my nose can only conclude that either he is a skunk or has been hanging out with'em! lol

I didn't realize when I answered your questions that gave you the right to slam me from one end to the other, I thought you asked thoughtful questions and actually wanted a discussion.

I vote for R's because they are slightly closer to my views than D's and L's who are the closest never get elected. so your vote for D's is a lot further from your views than my vote is.

And defense of the country IS in the Constitution so IS one of the few things they are allowed to D.E.W. whether you want the money spend there or not.

And congress spends way, Way, WAY too much money on things i don't like but I don't blame you for it. I blame them.[/b]

I'm sorry D E W , it was not my intention to slam such a pretty lady. A word to the wise, do not pay attention to WTF he is a real SOB.

It is not a question of whether I want money spent on Defense it is a question of how much. Do you think the government should spend money on the "War on Drugs"? Should our military personnel be fighting that war in other countries?

To get a better picture of just how much money is thrown at Defense take a look at this chart and you will see just what Ike meant in his Military Industrial farewell speech.***

    http://www.warresisters.org/pages/piechart.htm

The government practice of combining trust and federal funds began during the Vietnam War, thus making the human needs portion of the budget seem larger and the military portion smaller.

    ***here's a snipet.

A vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. Our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction.

Our military organization today bears little relation to that known by any of my predecessors in peacetime, or indeed by the fighting men of World War II or Korea.

Until the latest of our world conflicts, the United States had no armaments industry. American makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. But now we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense; we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. Added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. We annually spend on military security more than the net income of all United States corporations.

This conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the American experience. The total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every State house, every office of the Federal government. We recognize the imperative need for this development. Yet we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. Our toil, resources and livelihood are all involved; so is the very structure of our society.

In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the militaryindustrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist.

Actually we spend more on welfare than the defense of our country. Check the budget for HHS vs DOD.

    The Government Deception

The pie chart below is the government view of the budget. This is a distortion of how our income tax dollars are spent because it includes Trust Funds (e.g., Social Security), and the expenses of past military spending are not distinguished from nonmilitary spending. For a more accurate representation of how your Federal income tax dollar is really spent, see the large chart (top).
