Hi,
I've been reading and reading....but I figured we have a lot of IT people on here and maybe you can make it easy for me to understand.
What is a mirror site and why are they used?
Sincerely,
Velvet

Wikipedia actually has a decent explanation.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirror_(computing)
Basically, a mirror site is a duplicate site (web, database, file download) that is kept synchronized on a regular basis. It can be used as a fail over site or to help distribute high usage loads across multiple systems and/or network links.

In this case, it means some variation of:
Copy all the software and data from ASPD to another computer.
Give it a new name, xyz.net.
The ASPD members log into xyz.net and it looks just like ASPD.
In reality, they'd probably update software, make a few changes, etc.
It's not clear whether the new xyz.net site Angel and Deuce are working with will have all the data from ASPD.

Typically, a mirror site refers to a duplicate of an original that is ready to take over at a moments notice if the primary site fails. Many businesses use mirror sites to host business applications and data in case a disaster of some sort takes out the primary datacenter. Websites can have mirror sites too, but the more common method now is to have sites running on arrays of servers simultaneously. That is how Microsoft, Google and folks like that handle it. If one of the servers dies or needs some maintenance it is taken offline, but no one knows that because the traffic continues to the other servers in the array. There are all sorts of ways to create redundancy for both the application and the data. The expense involved is directly related to how quickly the mirror site becomes effective.
Hope that helps... BTW, I like the hose in your avatar :)
